Choosing The Right Desk For You

by Eric Wright

You would be hard pressed to find an office or home that does not have a least one desk in it somewhere. Regardless of where you find them, these versatile pieces of furniture are used universally by people to read, do paperwork, write and work on the computer. The perfect piece will be functional, stylish and durable enough to last a very long time.

Technically classified as tables, desks come in a wide variety of sizes. They can made out of any number of different materials including wood, plastic and metal, to name a few. Many will have a design that includes shelves and pigeon holes. Most will also have a series of drawers for storage.

Usually built for use by a single person, there are also units available that have enough room for two people to sit facing each other across a large work space. These are called partners desks.

Very popular during the 14th and 15th centuries, roll tops are making a comeback and some that were made centuries ago can be found in antique shops and at estate sales. These were used widely in corporate and government offices back in the day. Work clutter can be hidden in an instant by pulling the door closed. Often there were secret compartments that were used by the owner to hide valuable items and sensitive documents. These compartments were first introduced by the Italians but the trend eventually reached England and America.

The widespread use of typewriters early in the 20th century made steel a favorite choice for manufacturers. Better carbon paper saw an increase in paper usage and together with the additional equipment being used there was a greater need to support more weight. The typewriter often sat on the leg of an L-shaped table.

Modular units that can seat several people and be easily rearranged were created for offices that house a number of desk workers in a limited space. These are usually very affordable and are typically mass produced out of fiberboard or plywood and covered with a simulated wood finish. Laminate has a wood core with a plastic finish and is actually more durable than wood alone.

For those who like to have everything within easy reach, there is the corner desk. In addition to being extremely streamlined and efficient, there is lots of room underneath to allow you plenty of space for your legs. You also will not have to push your chair around the room. Instead, all you have to do is swivel to one side or the other.

A great choice for a home desk is the armoire type unit that comes equipped with a cabinet. Doors similar to those found on most wardrobes allow you to hide away your paperwork and office equipment in the blink of an eye. These are often called computer tables and they will also have a keyboard shelf that can be adjusted. A high ledge or shelf can accommodate a small lamp.

The perfect piece of office furniture for you will depend on your specific needs. When it is time to buy, take a look at the available options and weigh the advantages and disadvantages of each so you can make an informed decision.
